Christopher Leusner

Christopher Leusner is the Chief of Police in Middle Township, New Jersey. He has over 24 years experience in law enforcement, the last twelve years as Chief of Police. He is a past President of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police where he represented over four hundred Police Chiefs. He is a past State President of the FBI National Academy Associates New Jersey Chapter and past President of the Cape May County Chiefs of Police Association. Chief Leusner was a Leadership Exchange Fellow at the College of Policing in the United Kingdom in 2014 and was invited to the White House by the Obama Administration in the summer 2016 for a briefing on 21st Century Policing. He is one of the original six coalition members of the Cape Regional Wellness Alliance, a small coalition of community leaders founded in 2016 charged with administering grant funds from New Jersey Health Initiatives to reduce the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences in Cape May County. In 2018, Chief Leusner implemented the “Handle with Care” (HWC) program in Middle Township that established protocols for law enforcement communication with the school districts to enhance awareness of the significant risks to children who were exposed to traumatic events. He then worked with New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal in 2020 to implement Attorney General Directive 2020-9, mandating the “Handle with Care” program for every law enforcement agency in the state and training on adverse childhood experiences. Chief Leusner is a firm believer in Community Problem Oriented Policing and views tackling the root cause of crime by investing significant time and resources into Intervention and Prevention efforts to compliment Enforcement efforts. Chief Leusner has spoken about Police Youth Engagement in the 21st Century with a Trauma Responsive Approach throughout New Jersey and at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana University, Stockton University, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Annual Conference in Chicago and at the National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing and Media. In September 2018, Oprah Winfrey publicly praised Chief Leusner’s efforts in this area and her remarks were picked up by the national media. Chief Leusner holds a master’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Administrative Science with a certificate in Law and Public Safety Leadership, he is a graduate of the FBI National Academy Session#234 and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police West Point Command and Leadership Academy.
