Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences

This training provides awareness concerning the effect of Childhood Adverse Experiences (ACES) on children and later as adults.  It provides awareness concerning the growing body of research on the subject but that once individuals become aware of their ACE score or trauma they experienced as a child, they can take steps to mitigate the physical, mental, emotional, and sociological effects of a high ACE score.  This training was specifically designed to teach law enforcement professionals and educators together to break down silos of these two professions, create dialogue and ultimately policies to effectively handle children who are exposed to an ACES event so they can receive help or counselling.

The ACES/Handle With Care Curriculum and Pilot Programs were made possible by a grant provided by the Burke Foundation in 2021 & 2022.  Three pilot training sites were selected in the State of New Jersey and the program was successfully piloted training educators and local law enforcement officers together to build policy and connections in this space at the local level.
