Dr. Thomas A. Shea
Resiliency Facilitator
Tom started his career with the Long Branch Police Department in 1998 after serving honorably
in the United States Marine Corps during Operation Desert Shield/Storm. He served as an
investigator in both the Street Crimes Unit and the Juvenile Bureau before being promoted to
Sergeant in 2004 and Lieutenant in 2007. He retired in February 2017, serving in the Internal
Affairs/Training and Assistant Patrol Commander positions and on the county SWAT team.
Presently, Tom serves as the Program Director and Assistant Professor of Police Studies at Seton
Hall University. Tom also served as the Director of Safety and Security for the South
Orange/Maplewood, NJ School District for three years. Tom holds a Bachelor of Science degree
in Administration of Justice from Rutgers University, a Master of Public Administration degree
from Seton Hall University, and a Doctor of Science in Civil Security Leadership, Management,
and Policy from New Jersey City University. Additionally, he is a Certified Protection
Professional (CPP) by the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) and an active member
of PERF, ACJS, NJACJE, and PBA 600. Tom published numerous professional and academic
articles in peer-reviewed journals and police trade magazines and presented at nationwide
criminal justice and school security conferences nationwide. Lastly, his book, “115 Proven Ways
to Dramatically Improve Your Agency, Your Officers & Your Leadership,” was published
nationally in 2020. Tom is married with three boys and lives on the Jersey Shore.
